TORONTO – Yesterday, Richmond Hill MPP Daisy Wai, debated her Private Member’s Bill in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and was thankful to receive unanimous support from her Parliamentary colleagues as Bill 9, The Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Act, 2021 passed Second Reading.
This Bill aims to recognize and show appreciation to the dedicated service of professionals working in Ontario’s non-profit sector by proclaiming the third week of February in each year as Non-profit Sector Appreciation Week.
During the debate, MPP Wai reflected on her own experience of starting up and running a non-profit organization after immigrating from Hong Kong. “I know firsthand and understand the many challenges. I was the only staff, a staff with no pay, trying to recruit volunteers and seek donations. However, it was the encouragement I received that inspired me to plough through”, said MPP Wai.
“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to MPP Daisy Wai and her staff for leading the effort to create a Week of Appreciation for the Nonprofit Sector in Ontario. They are spotlighting the 1 million staff who work in the Sector and contribute $50 billion annually to the Ontario economy.” said the Bhayana Family Foundation. “These mission driven individuals and teams are an essential part of our social infrastructure as Covid19 has aptly demonstrated. They work in every nook and cranny of this beautiful province to transform lives and enhance the quality of life for their communities.”
As Bill 9 continues through the Legislative process, MPP Wai looks forward to continuing to meet with and advocate for these “invisible heroes” through her Monthly Community Meeting, “Monday Matters” where we highlight some of the incredible people behind the scenes in our non-profit sector.
