April Hubbard

April Hubbard

2024 Invisible Champion Award - Nova Scotia/Halifax

Board Chair

Halifax Fringe Festival

Nominator Comments:

April has been a huge force for the Halifax Fringe, and by extension the performing arts community across the province. She has put in countless hours to ensure that this unjuried festival could not only be a haven for those who did not see themselves reflected onstage in theatre, but an organization that could champion accessibility, leading by example. Since her time at the festival began, there has been a much greater diversity of performance acts, and exponentially larger numbers of disabled artists having the opportunity to perform. Her experience as a disabled woman allows her to guide those working to create inclusive performances and spaces. By advocating with venues, presenters, partners, and within the community at large, April has actively made the theatre landscape in Nova Scotia a better and more accessible one. She is an outspoken advocate whose focus is to empower people with disabilities to discover their voice and to be leaders in designing the society in which they wish to live.
