Boys and Girls Club of Preston

2024 Invisible Champion Award - Nova Scotia/Halifax

Charnell Colley and Team, Preston

Nominator Comments:

Boys & Girls Club of Preston is a fee operated program within the African Nova Scotian community which can often create a barrier for children and youth for participation due to low-income families. The club saw the need to develop a Bursary Program to mitigate this barrier., Boys & Girls of Preston has collaborated with different community organizations such as the Youth Outreach Program at our Family Resource Centre to put on various activities in particular the Rising Generation For Success Youth Nights and March Break Camp where we served 35 youth from the African Nova Scotian community. During these programs they learned about career development, and unpacked several topics which the ANS communities tend to gaze over such as mental health. Youth were able to obtain First Aid certification as an outcome for this program and readiness for employment. Boys & Girls Club of Preston is located within the African NS Community of East Preston and surrounding areas. The club members and staff are very diverse. One highlight for me was when I witnessed a staff member named Chesley Vallis give one on one support to a child that is diagnosed with autism. This child was at first reluctant to attend the program, but Chesley went above and beyond to ensure a smooth transition into the club where the parent expressed that the child felt included, and each day looks forward to attending the program after school. This shows that Chesley is an invisible champion within the Boys & Girls Club of Preston and deserves recognition.
