North Preston’s Future, North Preston

Nominator Comments:

Miranda founded and launched North Preston’s Future (NPF) Community Organization Society in 2015 and has held a senior leadership position within the organization since. In her role as Executive Director, Miranda has secured significant financial investment for the organization, including $121,443 in funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) to repurpose an existing building into an Afrocentric hub for local youth and the community. Through the organization, Miranda works to build representation and knowledge of the historical and current relevance of the North Preston community (the largest Black community in Canada with more than 3,000 residents), encouraging youth to connect with elders and learn about Afrocentric forms of art and heritage. She also coordinates and hosts several community events, such as the Annual North Preston Day Celebration and Peace Basketball Tournament, which promote cultural diversity and inclusivity through social connection and sport. Miranda has cultivated several meaningful relationships within the social and private sector, including partnering with the Black Business Initiative (BBI) to develop and deliver programming on topics like leadership, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship; and collaborating with The PREP Academy to offer the Peace Scholarship Award (4 scholarships of $1,500) for African Nova Scotian students who are contributing to a peaceful society and are committed to enhancing our communities.
