On-Scene Crisis Response Team – Project NORTE, Victim Services of York Region Inc.

2025 Team Achievement Award -

Nominator Comments:

In the face of overwhelming challenges, the on-scene crisis response team demonstrated unparalleled dedication, compassion, and resilience. During Project NORTE, which identified approximately 100 survivors of human trafficking, the team stepped up in the most critical way. Despite the already heavy workload, they provided immediate vital support to 64 survivors and continuously worked with 53 survivors in the months following. Many faced severe barriers like precarious immigration status, isolation and limited access to resources. With unwavering focus, the team navigated complex systems, built new community connections, and offered emotional and practical support, ensuring clients were not alone in their journey. Their work went beyond just crisis intervention; they became a lifeline, advocating for human trafficking survivors and bringing awareness to a system that often failed them. The team’s success was not only in their direct work with clients but in their ability to support each other. In an environment of vicarious trauma, team members consistently checked in on each other, offering support in both big and small ways— whether through taking shifts, providing space to process difficult moments, or simply reminding each other that their efforts mattered. This culture of care ensured they were not only able to provide exceptional service to those in need but also to maintain their own well-being, proving that collaboration, communication, and compassion can transform even the most challenging of situations. The team’s collective strength helped survivors move forward—whether returning home, gaining immigration status, or finding a new sense of belonging—and highlighted the profound impact that can be made when passionate individuals come together for a common cause.
