Staceyan Sterling

2016 Dedication Award - Peel

March of Dimes Canada

Nominator Comments:

Staceyan is extremely dedicated to helping people living with disabilities. She inspires clients and advocates for their support. She makes a positive difference in the lives of everyone she meets.

Staceyan is extremely dedicated to our community in Mississauga and specifically the community of people living with disabilities. She takes every opportunity to meet people in the community at large and engage them in conversation about our LIFE program, quickly steering the conversation toward opportunities for others to participate, volunteer or otherwise contribute to the success of our program in improving the life skills and engagement of our program participants. Through this continual outreach in her day-to-day life, she has recruited numerous volunteers and educational professionals, such as Jim Arnold, a music teacher who gave a demonstration at our October 2015 open-house – showing to prospective participants and their families the sort of special programming we planned for the next 10-weeks. Through use of drums and special chimes, Jim was able to involve all ability levels in the audience in performing a version of our Capitol Hill clock-tower jingle.

Staceyan is gifted at both inspiring our participants and advocating for their support. She has taught me that almost everyone in our community would wish to provide support to our program if asked at moments of emotional connection, which we can facilitate as our participants travel within Mississauga. The connection is doubly beneficial, allowing participants to advocate for themselves in supportive public environments, while the public becomes more aware of our interconnectedness, and we are frequently approached with offers of support.

Have you been helped by a human service champion? We would love to hear about it.
