Nominator Comments:
Vanessa currently works at the Barristers Society of NS, but I am nominating her in the context of her work at the African NS Decade for People of African Descent (ANSDPAD) Coalition, where she worked relentlessly on behalf of African NS groups and organizations to advance concerns and ensure voices were heard. Vanessa worked closely with IONS as a partner in the Black History Learning Journey – a series of webinar-style panels focused on the history of African NS and Black communities in our province. She was an incredible host, story teller, and able to connect with a range of people who were willing to share their stories through this learning opportunity. Vanessa has successfully advocated for changes to address inequities facing the Black population in NS. She has worked with educators, policy makers, people in the justice system and others to ensure community voices are heard.
